Man sentenced to over 8 years in prison for attempted murder

AMMAN — The Cassation Court has upheld a July Criminal Court ruling, sentencing a man to eight years and seven months in prison after convicting him of attempting to murder a man in March 2017.

The Criminal Court declared the defendant guilty of attempted murder, stemming from an old feud with the victim.  

Court papers said that the defendant had constant feuds with the victim and decided to kill him.

On the day of the incident, March 11, the court maintained, the defendant contacted one of his friends to drive him to a shop where the victim used to hang out.

“The minute he saw the victim in the street, he pulled his gun and fired several rounds at him,” court documents said.

The defendant left the scene and the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, court documents stated.

The victim underwent a surgery to extract a bullet from his stomach and survived the shooting incident, the court papers added.

The defendant contested the verdict through his lawyer, claiming to be innocent.

The defendant also claimed that he was unable to present some witnesses and that there were “irregularities with the investigation procedures”.

The Criminal Court’s attorney general asked the higher court to uphold the ruling.

The higher court ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate and that the defendant was given the appropriate punishment.

The Cassation Court bench comprised judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Bassim Mubeidin, Majid Azab, Yassin Abdullat and Mohammad Khashashneh.
