AMMAN — A Royal Decree was issued on Wednesday approving the Cabinet's decision to appoint Brigadier General Atef Messeideen to head the Public Security Department (PSD) after promoting him to major general, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Messeideen assumed his job on the same day, replacing Gen. Tawfiq Tawalbeh, who was among three security leaders sacked last week for “lack of coordination” among them.

Tawalbeh was referred to pension, along with former Gendarmerie Department director, Maj. Gen. Ahmad Sweilmin.

Former interior minister, Hussein Majali, resigned his post.

In a statement, following these decisions, Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour said the decision came "in light of His Majesty King Abdullah's commitment to asserting the rule of law, enhancing the principle of security for all and showing no tolerance towards those who undermine the foundations on which the Kingdom was established.

Majali was replaced by veteran Salameh Hammad, who had held the post twice in the 1990s, while the Gendarmerie top post was still vacant.
