Minor handed one year in juvenile detention centre for assaulting man

AMMAN — The Court of Cassation has upheld a September 2017 Juvenile Court ruling, sentencing a minor to one year at a juvenile detention centre after convicting him of assaulting a man with a bottle in Maan in  March 2020.

The Juvenile Court found the minor guilty of striking a man's head with a glass bottle following a heated argument on March 1. 

The minor was handed a three-year prison term.

However, the court decided to reduce the sentence to one year because "the victim dropped charges against the defendant".

The court also stated that the juvenile confessed the assault, "which also contributed in the reduction in penalty".

Court papers said that on the day of the incident, the defendant was at a coffee shop when an argument ensued with the victim.

"The minor grabbed a glass bottle and struck the victim in the head causing a deep wound to his front head," according to court documents.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where attending physicians managed to stitch the wound. 

The higher court ruled that the Juvenile Court had followed the proper procedures and the defendant deserved the verdict he received.

“The defendant confessed willingly to the assault and the punishment he received is appropriate,” the higher court ruled.

The Court of Cassation judges were Mohammad Ibrahim, Hayel Amr, Fawzi Nahar, Majid Azab and Ibrahim Abu Shamma.
