Nearly 1,300 road accidents reported this week

AMMAN — Four people were killed in separate road accidents in Amman this week, the capital’s traffic department said on Thursday. 

A female motorist was killed when her vehicle overturned in Marj Al Hamam earlier this week, Amman Traffic Department Director Col. Basem Kharabsheh said. 

“On Monday, a road accident caused the death of the driver in Abu Nseir area and injured two others,” he said.

The accident, which occurred at 6pm, was caused by a driver changing lanes suddenly, according to Kharabsheh.

On the same day, a motorist was killed in Tabarbour and four people were injured when two cars collided after a vehicle changed lanes without indicating. 

In another accident on Monday, a bus collided with a car on Queen Alia Street in Shmeisani, killing one person immediately and leaving several others injured, including one passenger who is in critical condition. 

The accident took place 15 minutes before the iftar meal, which breaks the daily fast during Ramadan, Kharabsheh said.

“Most of the dangerous accidents are caused by motorists changing lanes suddenly. Speed is not the main reason behind car collisions in road accidents,” he told The Jordan Times.

Nearly 1,300 road accidents were reported between Friday and Wednesday across Jordan, according to official figures. 

Kharabsheh urged motorists to leave their houses with enough time to safely reach their destinations, to abide by traffic rules and only drive when necessary.

“The majority of accidents happen before or at iftar time, since people are in a weak psychological and physical state. We advise them to drive slowly,” he added.

He also urged motorists not to double-park on crowded streets to avoid crashing into other vehicles.
