New heatwave to affect Kingdom as of Monday — JMD

AMMAN — The Kingdom will be affected by a new heatwave between Monday and Thursday, Acting Director of the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) Hussein Momani said on Saturday.

JMD’s analyses of surface maps have shown that the impact of the heatwave will start on Monday, when temperatures in the capital are expected to reach a high of 38ºC during the daytime and 43ºC in Aqaba, Momani said in a JMD statement.

He expected temperatures to keep rising on Tuesday, when Amman is forecast to register a high of 39ºC and Aqaba a high of 45ºC.

Mercury levels on Wednesday in Amman are forecast to stand at 37ºC during the day, while a high of 43ºC is expected for Aqaba, Momani added.

He noted that this heatwave is the third in the season, adding that this dry mass is accompanied with the seasonal depression affecting most countries of the region, including Jordan.

Temperatures will increase in most regions of the country, with the capital and hilly areas witnessing hot conditions, and very hot in other parts of the Kingdom, Momani said, noting that the peak of the heat wave will be on Tuesday.

The JMD official renewed warnings in such weather conditions, calling on the public to avoid direct exposure to the sun, especially at peak hours, and not to leave children alone in closed vehicles.

He also urged people to drink a lot of liquids, especially water, according to the statement.
