One virus-related death, 77 local infections recorded on Wednesday

AMMAN — One death related to the coronavirus and 78 virus cases, including 77 local infections, were registered in the Kingdom on Wednesday, increasing the caseload to 2,659, according to the government.

The deceased was identified as a 39-year-old woman, who earlier in day underwent a caesarian section in Prince Hamzah Hospital,  the hospital director Abdulrazzaq Khashman told the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

The baby was delivered safely, he added. 

The local cases comprised 55 infections in Amman, of which 47 are contacts of COVID-19 patients, while the sources of the other eight patients are under investigation.

Among the domestic cases were also 13 infections in Karak and four in Madaba, according to a joint statement by the Prime Ministry and the Health Ministry.

The case from abroad was a Jordanian, who returned to the Kingdom and has been lodged at the Dead Sea quarantine area.

Meanwhile, 34 recoveries were registered during the past 24 hours, including two from Prince Hamzah Hospital, 28 from the Dead Sea quarantine area and four from Queen Alia Military Hospital, the statement said.

A total of 9,765 random virus tests were also conducted on Wednesday, bringing the cumulative number of coronavirus tests administered since the outbreak of the pandemic to 925,234.

Amid the growing number of local infections, the Ministry of Health has renewed its call on the public to abide by Defence Order No.11 and adhere to precautionary measures, mainly wearing face masks, maintaining physical distancing and avoiding holding gatherings that exceed 20 people.

The ministry also highlighted the “Aman” (Safety) application for smartphones, which alerts users if they come into contact with a person infected with the virus, as well as “Sahtak” (your health) application, which provides users with the latest information and news related to the COVID-19 disease, in addition to guidelines and warnings pertaining to the Kingdom’s epidemiological situation.
