Petra sees record of 53,896 tourists in March

AMMAN — The number of Petra visitors in March stood at 53,896 tourists of all nationalities, comprising 43,533 foreigners, 3,859 non-Jordanian Arabs and 6,504 Jordanians, the highest number since the outbreak of the pandemic, the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) announced on Saturday.

PDTRA's statistics showed that the rose-red city in February welcomed 21,557 tourists of all nationalities, comprising 14,898 foreigners, 1,836 non-Jordanian Arabs and 4,652 Jordanians, according to a PDTRA statement.

The increase rate between February and March stood at 292 per cent, the authority added. March 2021 welcomed a total of 4,656 visitors of all nationalities, the majority of whom were Jordanians and other Arab nationals, while Petra in March 2019 welcomed some 74,413 tourists from all nationalities. PDTRA Chief Commissioner Suleiman Farajat said that the city is witnessing a remarkable increase in the number of visitors, mainly after alleviating COVID restrivtions for the Kingdom's guests as of early March.
