Police probe killing of two officers in Irbid

AMMAN — Two police officers fell in the line of duty in Irbid late Monday night and were laid to rest on Tuesday, according to a Public Security Department (PSD) statement.

The two victims, Captain Jamal Darawsheh and Corporal Usama Jarawreh, were in their patrol vehicle near the Samma intersection to the west of Irbid, some 80 kilometres north of Amman, when unidentified assailants reportedly fired bullets at their vehicle.

Jarawreh was injured by the bullets, which caused him to lose control of the vehicle and so it hurled down, according to the statement.

Both officers were rushed to nearby hospitals but were both declared dead on arrival as a result of wounds sustained in the attack, the PSD statement added.

The police pledged to arrest the assailants and are conducting a thorough investigation and a hunt for the suspects, the PSD statement said.

Local news websites said Darawsheh was a father of four children, including twins aged seven, a four-year-old child and a six-month-old baby.

Meanwhile, Jarawreh, who has been married for two years, was the father of a six-month-old baby.

Deputising for His Majesty King Abdullah, the Supreme Commander of the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army, Public Security Department Director Maj. Gen. Atef Saudi attended the funeral of Captain Jamal Darawsheh and offered his condolences to the family.

Darawsheh was buried in his native town of Zmal in Irbid.

Deputising for His Majesty, Irbid Governor Saad Shihab attended the funeral of Corporal Usama Jarawreh and offered his condolences to the corporal’s family in the town of Buweida in the northern Ramtha District.
