AMMAN — The Criminal Court prosecutor on Sunday began questioning a man in connection with the alleged murder of his 45-year-old wife earlier in the day in Amman, official sources said.

Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said police received information that a man murdered his wife over a domestic dispute.

“A police force headed to the house and arrested the suspect and seized a knife,” Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

Forensic experts who visited the crime scene conducted a quick examination of the victim’s body and “counted around 20 stab wounds to different parts of her body”, according to a senior medical source.

The Criminal Court prosecutor will start cross-examining  the suspect late Sunday night, a senior judicial source told The Jordan Times.

“The suspect confessed to murdering his wife and we are hopeful that when we cross-examine him we will learn more details regarding the circumstances that led to the murder,” the senior judicial source added.

The criminal court prosecutor will summon the family members of the victim and the suspect for further questioning, the senior judicial source added.

The victim’s body was transferred to the National Institute of Forensic Medicine (NIFM) for an autopsy, the senior medical source told The Jordan Times.

“A government medical team led by NIFM director Majid Shamayleh will perform an autopsy on Monday,” the senior medical source added.

The suspect was ordered detained at a correctional and rehabilitation centre by the criminal court prosecutor for 15 days pending further investigations.
