AMMAN — The fifth Danish-Arab Interfaith Dialogue International Conference kicked off on Tuesday, under the patronage of HRH Prince Hassan, chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Royal Institute for Interfaith Studies (RIIFS).
The conference, titled “Muslim-Christian Dialogue Towards a Better Understanding” was organised by the Forum for Development, Culture and Dialogue in partnership with the Danish Church Foundation and the RIIFS, according to His Highness Office’s statement.
During the conference, Prince Hassan stressed that dialogue is not merely a discussion between individuals or followers of different faiths to reach common convictions or a unified opinion.
Religious dialogue requires a definition of religions' role in contemporary times and a need to discuss religious discourse itself to move towards universal discourse, Prince Hassan said, adding that humanity’s existence, dignity and safety should be the centre of focus.
The prince stressed that the principle of mercy is the basis of religious, moral and spiritual traditions, as it encourages us to work to alleviate the suffering of others, promotes human dignity and enhances treatment on the basis of justice, equality and respect, according to the statement.
He also pointed out that the "Coexistence Campaign" launched in Denmark in 2006, which was the beginning of creating a culture of peace and participation, focused on several principles, including empowering the weak, guaranteeing freedom of religion and belief, promoting peaceful coexistence, ensuring the independence of the judiciary and the importance of human security, the statement said.
