AMMAN — HH Prince Mired, president of the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (HCD), and members of the Senate's Labour and Social Development Committee on Sunday discussed the importance of employing persons with disabilities in the public and private sectors.

Prince Mired reviewed the council’s key objectives and strategies, pointing out that the number of people with disabilities (PWD) in Jordan reached 1.2 million, accounting for 15 per cent of the Kingdom’s population, noting that the “alarming” rate requires consideration, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

The PWD Act 20/2017 included employment strategies for people with disabilities, the prince said, drawing attention to the need for focusing on inclusive education, as the majority of children with disability lack access to the education system.

He also went over the necessity of social inclusion of people with disabilities by encouraging the public and private sectors to employ them.

Talks also went over the weak participation of people with disabilities in the political process due to the absence of accessible polling stations, Petra added.

The prince also shed light on the need for providing the appropriate services in the field of accessible tourism, which supports the national economy, referring to other countries’ experiences in this field.
