Safadi reiterates Kingdom's support for Lebanon’s security

AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Friday reiterated Jordan's support for the security and stability of Lebanon, the safety of its citizens, and the country's de-escalation efforts.

During a conversation with Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib, over the phone focused on efforts to ease tensions in southern Lebanon, Safadi warned of the dangers posed by the possible extension of Israel's aggression against Gaza to the occupied West Bank and Lebanon, which could affect the entire region.

He also stressed the need for the international community to intervene to de-escalate tensions on the Lebanese-Israeli border and ensure respect for Lebanon's borders, sovereignty and security.

Safadi called for adhering to the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, in particular Resolution 1701, as a means of stopping the escalation and preventing the region from being dragged into another war that threatens regional and international security and stability.

The risk of escalation of the conflict is real and growing as Israel continues its aggression in Gaza, perpetuating the humanitarian catastrophe faced by the Palestinian people, and as the international community remains unable to stop the aggression and compel Israel to respect international and humanitarian law and stop the killing, bombing, using starvation and siege against the Palestinians.

Bou Habib underlined Lebanon's dependence on the solidarity and support of Arab countries, especially Jordan, as well as the United Nations and the international community to contain the escalating Israeli threats.

He also underlined Lebanon's efforts to find diplomatic solutions and ensure the success of the ongoing mediation towards the full implementation of Resolution 1701, which calls for an immediate halt to Israeli military aggression, the cessation of violations against Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and enhanced support for the Lebanese army to fully carry out its duties in maintaining security and stability in southern Lebanon in close cooperation with UNIFIL forces.

The Foreign Ministry on Friday repeated its warnings for Jordanians to avoid travelling to Lebanon.
