Senate president meets with Romanian counterpart, speaker

AMMAN — Senate President Faisal Fayez on Wednesday in Bucharest held separate meetings with his Romanian counterpart, the President of the Senate of Romania Alina Gorghiu, and the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of Romania, Marcel Ciolac. 

During the two meetings, the parties discussed enhancing bilateral relations and reviewed the state of the region and challenges it currently faces, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

Fayez also commended the “solid” nature of Jordanian-Romanian relations, and noted that they are based on mutual respect. The Senate president called to increase economic cooperation and build new partnerships with Romanian entities.

He also expressed his appreciation for Romania’s commitment to supplying Amman with wheat, and noted the need to open the Romanian market to Jordanian products, such as agricultural goods, phosphate, pharmaceutical products and Dead Sea products. 

On regional issues, and predominantly the Palestinian cause, Fayez said that the ongoing chaos and conflict in the region has “become unacceptable”, and called on the international community to “shoulder its responsibilities” and help the Palestinians meet their legitimate rights.

He also expressed appreciation for Romania’s supportive stance towards the Kingdom›s efforts to achieve a comprehensive and fair regional peace, in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions and the two-state solution.

He also commended the country’s support for the Hashemite Custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.

For their part, the Romanian Senate president and the House of Representatives speaker praised the well-established mutual relations and expressed their country’s keenness to develop and strengthen them in various political, economic, parliamentary and cultural fields.

“We appreciate Jordan’s great role in supporting international efforts to end the regional conflict, notably to realise a just peace and combat terrorism,” Gorghiu said.

Ciolac said that Jordan is a “strong partner for Romania” and the international community in stabilising the region.
