AMMAN — Police on Saturday announced the arrest of a suspect who was on the run in connection with the alleged murder of a man in Amman earlier in the day, according to official sources.

The victim was reportedly gunned down while in his vehicle at dawn on Saturday in Amman’s Shafa Badran neighbourhood, Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said.

“Investigators were able to identify a suspect in the incident and managed to arrest him few hours following the shooting incident,” Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

Initial investigations into the incident indicated that the alleged shooting occurred over an old feud between the suspect and the victim, Sartawi added.

“The suspect confessed to the shooting incident and investigators were able to retrieve a gun allegedly used in the incident,” the police official added.

The weapon was sent to the crime lab for a ballistic match, a senior official source said.

Meanwhile, news of the man’s death sparked riots in the area, the senior official source added.

“Several houses, shops and vehicles were set ablaze by multiple people,” the source stated.

Police forces were dispatched to the neighbourhood to contain the situation, the official source added.

Videos of visible smoke plumes in areas that people claimed were in Shafa Badran went viral on social media.

The victim’s body was transferred to the National Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy, a medical source told The Jordan Times.

Investigations are ongoing, according to police officials.
