Teachers syndicate seeks probe in ‘financial violations’

AMMAN — The Jordan Teachers Association's (JTA) council has asked the Cabinet to task the Audit Bureau with reviewing the syndicate's financial records and procedures, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Saturday.

The JTA council, explaining the decision, cited several violations and "unjustified" spending.

The association has spent over JD100,000 annually on contracts with various media firms, the council said, while the JTA has incurred over JD300,000 in losses related to health insurance costs, according to Petra.

The JTA's health insurance fund, to which 1,000 teachers from private schools and 6 from public schools are subscribed, has also incurred JD167,000 in debts.

The council highlighted the absence of a legal framework or legislation to regulate health insurance at the syndicate.

The association has also spent JD110,000 on the purchase and maintenance of its new headquarters, the council said.

The current council is the third since establishing the JTA in 2011. The previous two councils were dominated by Islamists and their independent allies, who lost the presidency, vice presidency and the majority of the seats in the April polls.
