Temperatures to rise as of Friday — JMD

AMMAN — After a brief dip, temperatures will rise on Friday back to around the annual average for this time of year, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said on Thursday.

The rise in temperatures is expected after the effects of a moderate air mass originating from the Mediterranean Sea subsided on Thursday.

“The moderate air mass started affecting the country mid this week. It brought pleasant summer weather and caused temperatures to drop to 29ºC during the day, which is around four degrees below the annual average for this time of year,” JMD forecaster Issam Yacoub told The Jordan Times.

Reports of an upcoming heatwave are false, Yacoub said, explaining that temperatures would reach a high of 35ºC in Amman next week, which is still around the annual average of 33ºC for this time of year.

The meteorologist highlighted that a heatwave is announced when temperatures soar 5ºC above the annual average for more than three days.

On Friday, the weather is expected to be relatively hot in the mountains, hot in the badia and the eastern plains and very hot in the Dead Sea, Aqaba and the Jordan Valley areas.

In Amman, temperatures will be 34ºC during the day, dropping to 21ºC at night, and winds will be northwesterly moderate, the JMD said.

A further rise in temperatures is forecast for Saturday and Sunday, when the weather will be relatively hot in the mountains, hot in the badia and the eastern plains and very hot in the Dead Sea, Aqaba and the Jordan Valley areas.

In the capital, daytime temperatures will be 35ºC, dropping to a low of 22ºC at night, according to the JMD, which forecast that winds will be northwesterly moderate.

Yacoub noted that temperatures at the Dead Sea and in Aqaba between Friday and Sunday will range between 38ºC and 40ºC, around the annual average during this time of year for both of the tourist attractions.
