Three Jerash residents treated for sunstroke

AMMAN — Three people were treated for sunstroke in Jerash on Monday, as temperatures exceeded 40°C in several areas around the Kingdom.

Jerash Public Hospital Director Fatteen Janem said a man and a woman suffered sunstroke while they were walking in a market.

Also, a man who works at a garage suffered heatstroke, he said, adding that the hospital treated the three patients and they were in a good condition.

Due to the heatwave, Jerash markets were almost vacant except for some pedestrians and cars, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.  

Heatstroke occurs when the body’s temperature rises as a result of excessive heat exposure. Under such conditions, the body loses its ability to cool itself and overheats.

During such weather conditions, people are advised to keep out of direct sunlight, drink plenty of liquids and to wear light and loose-fitting clothes. 

Heatstroke symptoms include a body temperature of 40°C or higher, altered mental state or behaviour, alteration in sweating, nausea and vomiting, flushed skin, rapid breathing, racing heart rate and a headache, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Others are required to take immediate action to cool the overheated person while waiting for emergency treatment, get the person into shade or indoors, remove excess clothing, and cool the person with whatever means are available.
