Trade Ministry says taking action to curb inflation, price hikes

AMMAN — The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply's spokesperson Yanal Barmawi said that the ministry is constantly monitoring commodity prices to check inflationary pressures.

“With the holy month of Ramadan approaching, the ministry has intensified monitoring of markets to prevent price manipulation,” Barmawi said, noting that the inspection teams are conducting proactive visits to the local market.

Barmawi also affirmed that the Kingdom has sufficient food stocks for an extended period of time. He also said that all staple foods and basic materials will be available at their current prices during Ramadan at the Military Consumer Establishment and the Civil Service Consumer Corporation.

The spokesperson also said that the government has taken several measures to counter the inflationary pressures due to the Bab Al Mandeb and Red Sea crisis, as well as the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip. "The measures included setting price ceilings for container prices aimed to reduce overall costs, according to the ministry."

In a ministry statement to The Jordan Times, Minister of Industry, Trade, and Supply Yousef Shamali said he has made an inspection tour to the Civil Service Consumer Corporation, and is following up on the oversight campaigns to check the availability of commodities and curb price manipulation.
