AMMAN — The unified admission list for local public universities will be issued before the second half of September, Khawla Awad, Unified Admission Committee (UAC) director at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research said on Sunday.

The number of seats allocated for the 2017-2018 academic semester is 30,941, Awad added, explaining that there are 150 seats available for students with international certificates through the unified admission system.

Applicants who have not completed their registration form have been contacted by the committee, Awad said, adding that some of the applicants who have not completed the form saw their applications getting cancelled automatically. The fall academic semester is scheduled to start by the third week of September for most public universities and the first week of October for private universities.

Minister of Higher Education Adel Tweisi said that the committee will be working on the admission list over the next few days and throughout the Eid holiday.

According to Tweisi, the committee responsible for evaluating the university presidents will be working in parallel to read the evaluations’ results in order to determine the progress of universities and of higher education in general.

Last week, the Ministry of Health announced the availability of 16 seats for children of employees who are willing to major in medicine in the regular admission programme, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

Hatem Azrui, the ministry’s spokesperson, stated that the seats were allocated for the regular and parallel programmes in public universities, and that they would be divided in the following manner: five seats for Mutah University, three for the Hashemite University, eight seats for Yarmouk University and three for the parallel programme.

The last day to submit an application to the programme will be on September 7, according to Petra. The programme requires a Jordanian high school certificate or an equivalent degree and an application to universities in accordance with the rules and formal procedures.

In February earlier this year, 12,700 students applied for the unified admission system.

The UAC director previously stated that the number of applicants has witnessed a drop as many students applied to the parallel programme directly.
