Water Ministry shares copy of water-energy agreement signed by Jordan, UAE and Israel

AMMAN — The Ministry of Water and Irrigation on Tuesday shared a copy of the document signed on Monday by the governments of Jordan, the UAE and Israel in Dubai.

The signing ceremony was attended by US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate Affairs John Kerry and UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Special Envoy for Climate Change Sultan Bin Ahmed Al Jaber.

The ministry in a statement said that the document includes the declaration of intent to negotiate the feasibility of a renewable energy project in Jordan to be implemented by a UAE company, in addition to a water desalination project to supply Jordan with 200 million cubic meters of water from the Mediterranean. 

Under the fifth article, the document is merely a declaration of intent, as the signatories are not subject to any legal obligations or legal rights under international law.

The statement added that as per the document, the three parties are going to consider the feasibility of the two projects by the third quarter of next year.

The document, in the first article, stipulated that the two projects are conditional; no project will be implemented without the other.
