AMMAN — The Criminal Court prosecutor charged a female street vendor with premeditated murder over the weekend in connection with the stabbing death of a street vendor in downtown Amman last week.

The 40-year-old man was reportedly stabbed once in the stomach by the suspect following a heated argument in the Saqf El Seil area late Tuesday night, police spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said.

The suspect was immediately arrested by traffic police who happened to be nearby, Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

“The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died shortly after being admitted,” the police official added.

Criminal Court Prosecutor Ali Raqqad questioned the suspect and charged her with premeditated murder, a senior judicial source told The Jordan Times.

In her initial testimony to authorities, the suspect told investigators that she had a heated argument with the victim over an old debt, “and that she ended up stabbing him once in the stomach with a switchblade”, the judicial source, who is close to the investigations, said.

“The suspect claimed that she did not intend to kill the victim and that she just wanted to scare him,” the judicial source added.

Raqqad is currently questioning more witnesses and family members, according to the judicial source.

The suspect was ordered detained by Raqqad at a women’s correctional and rehabilitation centre for 15 days pending further investigation into the killing.
