‘Work on JICA-funded Petra Museum project starts in 2017’

AMMAN — The Petra Museum project, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), will be implemented in 2017 under an agreement signed on Wednesday in the Petra region.

The agreement was signed by Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA), JICA and the contractor implementing the project, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The museum will incorporate Modernist engineering and architectural designs to showcase archaeological findings that embody the Nabataean and other cultures which were present in Petra, according to PDTRA Chief Commissioner Mohammad Nawafleh.

He said the museum will contribute to diversifying the tourism product in Petra and will boost the cultural and historical value of the site, increasing the length of time visitors stay in the area.

The Japanese grant agreement for the project was signed in 2014, under which Tokyo, through JICA, presented the $6.73 million grant to build the museum.

The ancient Nabataean city of Petra, 235km south of Amman, is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
