Faisali, Ramtha contest Super League crown

AMMAN  — Jordan Cup titleholders Faisali take on Pro League champs Ramtha on Tuesday in the 39th Jordan Super Cup, the second title up for grabs in the 2022 football season.

Traditionally played between the League and Jordan Cup champs, Wihdat won the title last year after it was not played in the 2019-2020 season. The match precedes the kick off of the Jordan Pro League.

Since it kicked off in 1981, the Super Cup has been won by Faisali a record 17 times out of 25 final appearances, Wihdat have won 14 times, Ramtha and Shabab Urdun twice each while Jazira, Hussein and Ahli won once each.

As the season competitions got under way, Faisali won the 35th Jordan Football Association  Shield title when they beat Ramtha in the first of the 2022 local football competitions.

It was a good warm-up ahead of the upcoming Pro League and Jordan Cup competitions.

In 2021, Ramtha won the Jordan Pro League for the third time in their history ending a 39-year drought. They edged out titleholders Wihdat who settled for second place. Wihdat beat one-time winners Jazira in the 38th Jordan Super Cup, while Faisali beat Salt to win the Jordan Cup.

With the Pro League, as well as, regional competitions ahead, players are back to their club line-ups. Wihdat won Palestine’s Al Quds Championship this week in which they took part alongside Ramtha and Faisali.

The national team will hold a training camp in May ahead of the kick off of 2023 Asian Cup qualifiers in Kuwait in which Jordan was drawn in Group A to play hosts Kuwait, Nepal, and Indonesia.

The U-23 team is also preparing for the 5th Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-23 Championship in Uzbekistan in June where they will play in a tough Group B against Australia, Kuwait and Iraq. The team held a training camp in Turkey in late March and played two friendlies against Tajikistan and Afghanistan.

Regionally, the season will see Wihdat the sole Jordanian team to play the continent’s leading tournament — the AFC Champions League. The draw placed Wihdat in Group E playing from April 7 — 27.

On the other hand, Ramtha and Faisali will not be playing the second-tier Asian club competition — the AFC Cup — after Jordanian teams did not qualify to play due to financial and technical constraints. It will be the first time Jordanian teams do not play since 2005.
