Wihdat, Faisali play to top league leaderboard

AMMAN — Jazira have regained the lead ahead of Week 16 of Jordan Professional Football League kicking off on Thursday.
The leaders beat Aqaba 4-1 to climb back to the top spot which they held throughout leg 1. Faisali moved up to 2nd after a 4-0 win over Salt, who dropped to fifth, while Shabab Urdun, who held the lead for two weeks, dropped to third after losing to Wihdat 2-0.
The upcoming week will see the most anticipated match of Wihdat taking on Faisali on Thursday, with the result having a direct effect on eventual standings as they begin to take shape.
Hussein moved up to 6th after they beat Sarih 3-0, while Ramtha moved up two spots to 9th after they beat Ahli 3-1. Baqa’a remained 8th despite beating That Ras 2-0 ahead of their match against Ramtha.
The week’s other matches will see Hussein play Aqaba, Jazira take on That Ras, Shabab Urdun meet Sarih while Ahli play Salt, who have now lost two consecutive matches.
The 2018/19 football season kicked off with league champs Wihdat beating Jordan Cup champs Jazira in the 36th Jordan Super Cup.
Last season, Wihdat won the league for a record 16th time since they joined in 1980. Jazira lost two competition finals conceding the 35th Jordan Super Cup to Faisali and the Jordan Football Association Shield final to Wihdat. Jazira finished runner-up in the league but made club history by winning the 38th Jordan Cup final after they last won the Jordan Cup in 1984.
Since the league kicked off in 1944, Faisali are record 33 time winners.
