AMMAN — The Independent Election Commission (IEC) received 15 requests related to rectifying the status of 15 political parties, out of which five were approved, IEC Board Chairman Musa Maaytah said.
By the end of February, 15 parties are expected to rectify their status in accordance with the provisions of the 2022 Parties Law, he said.
During a meeting of the Parliamentary Financial Committee held on Monday over the commission's 2023 budget, Nimer Sliehat MP, the panel head, said that the committee was briefed on the IEC's expenses, especially in light of the recent constitutional amendments that included transferring the file of political parties to the commission.
The lawmaker noted that the commission’s JD4.4 million budget has marked an increase of JD2.1 million, JD1.8 million of which has been allocated for current spending.
Maaytah attributed this year’s budget increase to a new link between party funding allocations and the IEC, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.
He also highlighted the commission work related to training partners from various bodies on the new parties law, dealing with elected officials, candidates and the media.
Financial support has declined recently, he said, highlighting efforts towards self-reliance to ensure liquidity to continue the commission's services.
