AMMAN — The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) has announced specific working hours for building sites with the aim of mitigating the effect of construction noise on the public, a GAM official said on Thursday.
Raed Haddadin, director of the building control department at GAM, said the municipality decided to take this step after receiving several complaints from city residents.
“The noise generated at construction sites annoys many people, especially when it is in a residential area,” Haddadin told The Jordan Times over the phone.
He said working hours on weekdays will start at 7:30am and wrap up at 5pm, adding that workers will be off on Fridays and public holidays.
Haddadin noted that GAM also set working hours during the fasting month of Ramadan, which will around mid-June according to the Islamic lunar calendar.
“They will work from 8:30am until 6pm.”
The municipal official said the measure taken by GAM will also benefit General Secondary Certificate Examination (Tawjihi) students.
“They wake up early and stay up all night studying, so they need some peace and quiet to concentrate,” he added.
A total of 127,800 students have registered for the Tawjihi summer session, which will start on June 15 and concludes on June 28.
