AMMAN — The Cabinet on Wednesday appointed Nayef Bakhit as the new president of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone (ASEZA), replacing Nasser Shraideh, who tendered his resignation earlier, a Prime Ministry statement said.

The statement quoted Prime Minister Omar Razzaz as underlining the significance of Aqaba as a tourist destination and an economic hub that supports national economy and serves as a stimulator of economic growth and job generation.

The premier stressed that the investments hosted in Aqaba should contribute to the development of the local community in the government and in the southern regional in general.

Bakhit hosts a master’s degree in Project Management from Leeds University in the UK and a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from University of Sheffield and has a 35-year career in the engineering field, specialised in project management, strategic planning and business development, according to the Prime Ministry.

The new ASEZA chief has served as CEO at Al Daman for Development Zones Company, a private company owned by the Social Security Investment Fund serving as the investing arm and holding company for major development zones in Jordan, among other senior jobs in the field of development and strategic planning.

The Cabinet also appointed senior officials in several vacancies, stressing that the appointments followed due procedure, based on the recommendations of a special committee that handles recruitments to top government positions and takes its decisions in light of a transparent selection process that includes tests and interviews.

The statement elaborates on the recruitment procedures and the resumes of the winning candidates.

Ali Khawaldeh was appointed secretary general of the Ministry of Political and Parliamentary Affairs “after he excelled over all other candidates applying for the job,” the statement said.

Within the same context, Taha Maghariz was appointed secretary general of the Charity Associations Register.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet decided not to renew the contract of the Jordan TV and Radio Corporation’s director general, Firas Nseir.
