AMMAN — Eastern Military Zone on Wednesday foiled an attempt to infiltrate and smuggle "large quantities" of narcotics from Syria into the Kingdom.

The Border Guards, in cooperation with the Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) and military security agencies, identified a group of smugglers attempting an illegal crossing into Jordan’s borders from Syria , according to a military source from the General Command of the Jordan Armed Forces - Arab Army (JAF).

Rapid response patrols were deployed and rules of engagement were implemented, including direct fire, the source said, noting that searching the area yielded 119,000 Captagon pills, 14,800 Tramadol pills, and 1,748 palm-sized sheets of Hashish.  The seized items were handed over to relevant authorities.

The group attempting the crossing is linked to the group involved in Tuesday's operation that resulted in killing First Warrant Officer Iyad Nuaimi, according to the same source.

JAF will deal "firmly" with these attempts to protect Jordan's borders and prevent any infiltration or smuggling operations, the source added, and will be vigilant to foil any endeavours that tamper with Jordan's national security.
