Fayez reiterates Kingdom’s firm stance in defence of Palestinians

AMMAN — Senate President Faisal Fayez on Saturday reiterated the Kingdom's firm stance, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah, in defending the Palestinian cause and the Palestinian people’s rights to independence and statehood on their own national soil, with Jerusalem as their capital, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.  

In a statement responding to those who are questioning Jordan’s stance on Palestine, Fayez said that, in spite of all the great sacrifices made by Jordanians and the army in support of Palestinians and to safeguard Al Aqsa Mosque and the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, some “try to cast doubt” on the Kingdom's historic positions, criticising the decision to disengage from the West Bank and claiming that the move was a "conspiracy" against the Palestinian cause, according to Petra. 

“They tend to forget that His Majesty the late King Hussein was originally against this decision, but later, Jordan embraced it under Arab pressure,” he said, noting that the decision was designed to dismiss allegation about Jordan controlling Palestinian decision-making, Petra reported. 

Criticising the questioning of the constitutionality of the disengagement decision and claims that it was taken to facilitate the so-called "Deal of the Century", Fayez highlighted the conformity of these critiques with the extreme Israeli right's discourse, according to Petra.  

“Jordan, under King Abdullah's leadership, is the most influential Arab voice, and it is almost the only one that rejects the so-called ‘Deal of the Century’, as it could affect our national constants and the constants of the Palestinians,” Petra reported the Senate president as saying.

Fayez also stressed that, as of yet, no one knows what the deal is.

His Majesty has listed the Palestinian cause at the top of his priorities in various international forums, Fayez said, emphasising that the King was the first to publicly reject the US decision that recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and led an international campaign against this decision, Petra reported.

 His Majesty has managed to extract a UN resolution that rejects the US decision about Jerusalem, he said, stressing that His Majesty's three noes, "No alternative homeland, no settlement and no meddling with the Hashemite Custodianship of Jerusalem", are clear, Fayez said.
