FM, Arab Ministerial Contact Group meet with Ukraine’s Kuleba

AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi and his counterparts, members of the Arab Ministerial Contact Group on Ukraine, on Tuesday held discussions with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.

The Warsaw-held talks focused on the efforts put towards reaching a peaceful solution to the crisis, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

The Arab Ministerial Contact Group, which was formed by the Arab League in March to work towards resolving the crisis in Ukraine, called for a ceasefire, emphasizing the need to end the crisis on the basis of international law and the UN Charter, as well as respecting the principles of good neighborliness and states’ sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Arab delegation, which met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on Tuesday, expressed concern over the crisis’ humanitarian, political, security and economic repercussions.

The delegation, which included Foreign Ministers of Egypt, Iraq, Sudan, Algeria, and the Secretary-General of the Arab League, discussed with the Ukrainian Foreign Minister efforts to cease fire and reach an agreement to resolve the crisis and restore peace and security.

The delegation expressed support for direct negotiations between the Ukrainian and Russian sides, emphasising its readiness to support this path towards ending military operations, in preparation for a sustainable political solution to the crisis, in line with the UN Charter, to maintain Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as both sides’ legitimate interests.

The Ukrainian Foreign Minister briefed the Arab Ministerial Contact Group on his country’s position over the output of the ongoing talks related to achieve a Ukrainian-Russian agreement.

The Arab ministers stressed the necessity of enhancing coordination to ensure the safety of Arab communities residing in the conflict zone and ease their movement to neighbouring countries.  

Talks also discussed the deep-rooted relations between the Arab countries and Ukraine.

Following the discussions, Safadi held bilateral talks with his Ukrainian counterpart, during which Safadi reiterated the Kingdom’s readiness to offer humanitarian support for Ukraine, highlighting Jordan’s decision over waiving visa requirements for the Ukrainians.

Upon arrival to Warsaw, the Arab delegation had met with Foreign Minister of Poland Zbigniew Rau.

Talks discussed Poland’s efforts to facilitate the meeting with the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, and Poland’s measures to facilitate Arab nationals movement through Poland.

 The Arab ministers and the Polish minister also discussed the implications of the Ukrainian crisis and Arab-Polish relations.
