GAM hopes to turn Amman carbon neutral by 2050

AMMAN — The Greater Amman Municipality on Wednesday announced plans to make Amman a carbon-neutral city by 2050, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Amman Mayor Yousef Shawarbeh affirmed that Amman’s energy resources will be environmentally friendly as a part of its membership commitment to the C40 network. 

During his participation at the U20 conference, which was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Shawarbeh said that the plan includes a set of main projects that aim to find new options and solutions for urban transportation, such as the Bus Rapid Transit project, which is expected to be operational by 2021.

He also added that the plan includes enhancing renewable energy and increasing green areas in cooperation with civil community institutions and private sector partners.

The U20 network was launched in 2017, to promote dialogue and cooperation between 25 global cities and G-20 nations, according to the group’s website. The G-20 countries who have the most significant economic impact include: Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South America, Turkey, the UK and the US, in addition to the European Union.
