AMMAN — Jordan’s permanent representative at the United Nations, Dina Kawar, on Tuesday stressed the importance of implementing UN Security Council resolutions on Yemen, especially resolutions 2214 and 2216.
After a closed-door meeting on Yemen, she said that council members expressed their concern over the humanitarian crisis in the country, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
Kawar, the current council president, said that members also discussed the importance of facilitating evacuating people and delivering humanitarian assistance to those in need.
She, on behalf of council members, thanked Jamal Benomar, outgoing UN special adviser on Yemen, for his work since 2011, and welcomed Ismail Ahmad who will succeed Benomar, Petra reported.
On April 7, Jordan circulated a draft UN resolution aimed at halting the escalating conflict in Yemen, where Houthi Shiite rebels and their allies are fighting supporters of the country’s embattled president.
Kawar, who chaired the council’s meeting during the vote on Resolution 2216, said that Houthis’ irresponsible practices, their continuous unilateral procedures and failure to abide by the council’s decisions led it to adopt the resolution.
