AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Thursday issued directives to Minister of Social Development Wajih Azaizeh and Health Minister Mahmoud Sheyyab to check on the site of a collapsed building in Amman's Jofeh area, according to a Royal Court statement. The two ministers, supervised by Prime Minister Hani Mulki, checked on the safety of the area's residents and issued instructions to provide them with alternative housing and necessary commodities.
The two top floors of the four-storey building collapsed earlier in the day due to its dilapidated condition, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Civil Defence Department (CDD) personnel evacuated the building before the collapse and no injuries were reported. Three neighbouring buildings were evacuated as a precautionary measure, given their similar condition. Social Development Ministry Spokesperson Fawaz Ratrout said a total of 200 people were evacuated.
